THE MYTH:
A Pentecostal man has been active in church ministry for years. He even plays the drums for the church worship team. However, he has a secret that no one else at the church knows: he is fighting the Spirit of God. He does not really want to surrender himself to God.
Time after time, the Spirit falls on the church as he and the rest of the music team are leading worship, and each time, he struggles against letting the Spirit take control of him. Finally, one night as he plays the drums, the Spirit falls on him. He feels the power of the Spirit overcoming him, and in frustration and rebellion, he screams out, "LEAVE ME ALONE!"
Immediately, the Spirit lifts from him, but now the man is frightened. He quickly prays and repents, but the Spirit does not return.Suddenly, the man realizes that this means an eternity in hell if he cannot get the Holy Ghost back. He frantically falls to his knees, weeping and begging God to forgive him . . . but there is no response.
Now man spends his life wandering from one Pentecostal church to another. At every service, he runs to the altar, praying for the return of the Spirit. But he will never get it back. It is too late. God has passed him by.
COMMENTS:
This is another intimidation story that Pentecostal pastors like to use to scare the wits out of their flock and make them think that their salvation is a very tenuous thing and can only be properly maintained by going along with whatever the church dictates.
But, more than that, it is a threat against anyone who "resists the Spirit". Pentecostals often feel somewhat foolish about their wild church services and there is a part of them that wishes that they did not have to go through all the hoopla. This story makes people afraid to question the hoopla. If they ask whether a worship service is getting out of hand, if they wonder whether some of the wild manifestations are really from God, or if they just are tired and would rather sit one out . . . then they are warned not to forget the drummer, who is now doomed eternally to hell for resisting the Holy Spirit.
The clear lesson: If you do not get on board with what is going on at this church, then God will never forgive you!
